Welcome to Cockenzie and Port Seton Amateur Radio Club's website
Welcome to the web site of Cockenzie and Port Seton Amateur Radio Club.
We are a very active club based in East Lothian, near Edinburgh, entering contests, undertaking training, holding talks and events throughout the year.
If you would like to meet us in person, our club nights are on the first Friday of every month (except January when it's the second Friday) in the lounge of the Thorntree Inn in Cockenzie. Check out our calendar for other events.
Members of the club can also usually be found in the Thorntree most Tuesday evenings.
Special contests call signs for certain Amateur licensees
Ofcom has considered a request from the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) for the use of special contests call signs for Amateur Full/Reciprocal Licensees who can demonstrate previous regular participation and achievement in special contests.
As a result, subject to availability, Ofcom has decided to make available call signs from the limited number available, to such successful applicants.
Ofcom has amended the application form to enable applications from such licensees.
Please note that special contests call signs for Amateur Full (Club) licensees will continue to be issued for Clubs under existing arrangements, but from 1 January 2011 the criteria for licences currently applying to individuals will also apply to clubs.
I'm running another of my popular radio test nights on Friday 19th Feb at 7.30pm in the Port Seton Community Centre, Resources Room 2. This is a great opportunity to have your radios checked out on professional test gear. I will be bringing along a Marconi 2955 Radiocomms test set, a HP Spectrum analyserand a Bird Thruline RF Wattmeter. Using this gear I can check a variety of parameters including: Output Power Deviation Recieve Sensitivity (SINAD) Harmonic purity I can perform these tests at any frequency from DC to 1GHz. You need to bring power leads, microphone (or keying device) You need to know how to adjust the output power on your radio (the 2955 can only handle 30W) and be familiar with the squelch controls. I'm happy to discuss the measurements and the use of the testers in general to anyone who wants to know. If you bring loads of radios, be prepared to be sent to the back of the queue after a couple to give everyone a fair chance of getting something tested. Entrance fee is £2 to cover room hire expenses.
John MM0JXI who looks after the club's website and our monthly newsletter has reached the grand age of 50 years old yesterday the 27th January.
" John now that you have reached that age it now officially entitles you to being a "Shack Pansy"...heh it is the reason I am one!!! As we are too old to be out there in all that cold, wet and windy weather building antennas and running out coax, we need the warmth and comfort that the shack offers"
Serious though on behalf of all the club members I would like to wish you a VERY HAPPY 50th BIRTHDAY. Enjoy your celebrations on Friday evening.
It is with deep regret to inform you that Bill MM0BXK/GM8ZLI sadly passed away this morning (11th January) at Roodlands Hospital, Haddington.
Bill was a great stalwart in the radio club for many, many years until his health deterioted which did not allow him to attend. He was one of lifes characters, a very, very quiet man but with an immense amount of knowledge and always a story to tell. Bill will be sadly missed.
As always at these times our deepest sympathies go out to Bill's family.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later and posted on the website.
